Cypress Unveils Industry's First Firmware-Programmable USB2.0 NAND Controller; Single-Chip EZ-USB(TM) NX2LP-Flex Controller Enables Value Added Features in NAND Flash-Based Thumbdrives
SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Sept. 19, 2005—
Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY), the market leader
in USB, today introduced the EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex(TM) USB controller, the
industry's first firmware-programmable USB2.0 high speed NAND flash
controller. The new controller allows manufacturers to add value to
commodity USB "thumbdrives," the most common application for NAND
Flash, by including features such as fingerprint sensors,
video-over-USB and others. It also enables consumer electronics
products such as DVB/PCTV cards, GPS receivers, and wireless
presenters to add NAND flash for their storage needs.
The EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex is the newest offering in Cypress's EZ-USB
LP family of high speed USB controllers, announced earlier this year.
The LP devices slash dynamic and standby power consumption by nearly
50 percent versus. alternative offerings. Cypress recently announced
that it has shipped over 5 million of the new devices in less than
five months.
"Market acceptance of our EZ-USB LP family of devices has exceeded
our high expectations," said Matthew Branda, product marketing manager
for Cypress's USB products. "The NX2LP-Flex device adds to this family
a uniquely programmable NAND flash controller that provides the
hard-to-pair duo of simplifying design while allowing for increased
functionality and integration. It addresses the needs of both
thumbdrive and consumer electronics suppliers, and enables the
convergence of these important and growing application segments."
Besides complete programmability, another major benefit of EZ-USB
NX2LP-Flex is the elimination of EEPROM, normally required in a
firmware-based design for code storage. EEPROM elimination results in
lower component cost, reduced power, board space savings, and a
simplified design process.
Key features of the EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex include:
-- High performance 8-bit NAND controller with enhanced 8051 core
and General Programmable Interface (GPIF)
-- Ultra-low power -- typically at 43 mA in active mode
-- 15 KBytes of on-chip code/data RAM
-- 12 fully-programmable GPIO pins
-- Supports write protect switch and LEDs for activity monitoring
-- Four programmable endpoints with double, triple, and quad
buffering options
-- 4 KB integrated FIFOs with automatic conversion to and from
16-bit buses
-- The CY3686 EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex Silicon and Development Kit is
available to facilitate the design process and speed
time-to-market for customers
-- USBE2.0 -- USB-IF high speed certified
Pricing and Availability
The EZ-USB NX2LP-Flex (CY7C68033/4) is in full production and is
offered in a lead-free 56-pin QFN package, in die-form for
space-conscious applications, and in custom-programmed form for
security applications. Depending on quantity and configuration,
pricing ranges from $2.50 to $4.00. The CY3686 Development Kit is
